Bric-a-Brac is an interactive installation composed of 7 readymade sculptural forms. These forms were found in the housewares section of a local thrift store, ranging from 99¢ to $4.99, and were all labeled as “bric-a-brac.” The 7 everyday objects were selected for their sculptural qualities and similar materiality (polished chrome wire). Some of the objects have recognizable uses (a wine rack, a file sorter…), while others are suggestive of function but have utilitarian purposes that elude us. Bric-a-Brac gives the viewer permission to cast aside reason and engage in the abstract/imaginary through the act of play. Reminiscent of metal brain teaser puzzles or classic building block toys, the audience is invited to stack, intertwine, cantilever, assemble, and disassemble the bric-a-brac to produce new sculptural forms devoid of utilitarianism.
